I took our son to see the presentation and he was completely engrossed with your adventures. Your family is one of the reasons he decided to go all in about through hiking. He decided if "real people" could do what you all did, he could too. If we can save the money, it looks like we will finish the AT around his 8th birthday.

Thank you for the word games. The Rhyming Synonyms are a great idea. My son has always loved language and languages so he might find this quite enjoyable, especially if I tell him that you are the ones who gave me the idea :)https://www.blogger.com/profile/04249655831923837855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-32946700892217395912010-12-17T22:43:00.133-08:002010-12-17T22:43:00.133-08:00My son's not yet two, so we still mostly carry...My son's not yet two, so we still mostly carry him on backpacking trips, but I still remember some of the games we played backpacking when I was a child.
One was a rhyming game: Come up with some rhyming phrase like "cedar leader", then find synonyms for both the words to turn it into something like "tree president", then get the other family members to guess the rhyme.
20 questions was also good, especially if the object was something in our environment or packs.
For my little brother, candy worked better than any of these, and trying to come up with candy types for every letter of the alphabet was a good game. Which we later extended to other categories of things.Erinhttp://www.groundtruthtrekking.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-63786975898175399482010-12-14T18:01:47.793-08:002010-12-14T18:01:47.793-08:00One more to add to your list: A break every 45 min...One more to add to your list: A break every 45 minutes, using a stopwatch! We promise our kids a 15 minute break with a snack every 45 minutes (a little trick we learned from Ray Jardine). We set a timer on a wristwatch, and they love it. Kids sometimes have a hard time going for long stretches of time without knowing when they will get to stop. If they know when they will get to stop, they will be more motivated to push ahead until the next break. They also know they will get a short play time and a snack... good motivation for our kids!ADVENTUREinPROGRESShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12969421780777507389noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-53167288331631366342010-12-14T17:40:54.776-08:002010-12-14T17:40:54.776-08:00Babba April ~ One of the reasons he is into the wh...Babba April ~ One of the reasons he is into the whole Spanish thing is so that he can go there. We are hoping we can save up enough money while he is learning that when he is really fluent we can all go as a family one summer.

Mr. H ~ I am more than happy to talk about hiking if you all are more than happy to talk about growing a foraging :)

Mel ~ These links are great. I picture you bribing your son like ET with Reeses Pieces! He will be right up there with The Barracuda if he keeps on hiking away. Five miles at 3 is a great endeavor. Perhaps one day we can all hike together.

FairyLover ~ I hear the White Mountains are beautiful. Good for Dad to take his son out into the woods. We do most of our science outside. It doesn't have to be done hiking, it is just our medium of choice. We find our son likes the visual aspect of being able to see and connect with the concepts. :)https://www.blogger.com/profile/04249655831923837855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-88049806062725710472010-12-14T11:22:13.464-08:002010-12-14T11:22:13.464-08:00Wow, what great games to play while hiking. Every year they spend a week in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. I'm going to pass some of these ideas on to him for those long hikes they take.

Kathi Still trying to figure out science for my 3rd grader.FairyLoverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08959088329880908252noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-20538183189677577772010-12-14T10:47:15.258-08:002010-12-14T10:47:15.258-08:00Love it! It just took a couple Skittles to "regain our energy" every mile or two. Since we normally don't eat candy, it was a pretty big deal.

Here are some other games we play....some are the same as yours and some are for rest breaks--all are kid-approved.
http://www.yourwildchild.com/blog1.php/2008/08/14/hiking-with-kids-trail-games

http://www.yourwildchild.com/blog1.php/2010/07/07/more-trail-games-for-kidsMelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17177478757331772420noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-31123949839634558062010-12-14T07:22:21.959-08:002010-12-14T07:22:21.959-08:00Very nice, I'm so happy that you are sharing t...Very nice, I'm so happy that you are sharing this on your blog.Mr. H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/04576034751522467377noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823898594499538913.post-1587882723582860372010-12-14T02:22:01.785-08:002010-12-14T02:22:01.785-08:00He will be ready for The Camino de Santiago if you...He will be ready for The Camino de Santiago if you still want to do that in a few years!babbaaprilhttp://yahoo.comnoreply@blogger.com
